Tomorrow Together

This year’s publication will center on hope, bridge building and community. To dream about what we can be and do together through larp. It doesn’t matter if you are a first time contributor, an experienced voice in the community, or where you live in the world. If you have an idea for any kind of media or simply a desire to take part: you can!

Here is where the journey starts: When we dare share our desired futures with the world we create paths we can walk together with intention towards the futures. To look at where we are heading through exploring the past, present and possible futures through tangible examples, steps and opportunities. We want you to shine a light on where there has been and are being made positive changes, what we can learn from them to make where we stand visible. We want you to shine a light on blind spots and places where we can grow. Mind you, these two are not mutually exclusive. We want you to share your dreams, hopes and inventions with us and the rest of the community!

Let it take time
While the publication will be that, a publication, we are open to all kinds of media pieces. No one says, the KP publication solely has to be in its traditional form or limited by what a printing press can deliver. So, if you have ideas you want to realise that break that mold now is a good time to pitch them.

We are aware this is a very open call, which can feel daunting, maybe even a little discouraging. Maybe it leaves you with no ideas or maybe you have an almost finished piece that just doesn’t feel like it fits. Stay with us! Sometimes ideas take time to develop. Sometimes an additional perspective or framing makes everything make sense. If you are left with these kinds of feelings, please don’t rule out your participation just yet. First, read the next sections about approaches, community wishes and then allow this call to marinate for a bit.

What approach will be yours?

There are different ways to approach creation of knowledge. For this publication, we have identified three ways you can be inspired by and apply to your work: as a time traveller, a gardener or a researcher.

You as a time traveller
You travel into the future in order to see what our larp community could look like, where we succeed in making positive changes. What does it look like in 25, 50 or maybe even 100 years from now? Zoom in on small and specific corners or look through a wide angle lens. Bring back your vision to our present time and paint a picture we can see, feel, taste and believe! It will let us build that future together. 

You as a gardener
You understand that all is connected and that it, with care and nurturing love, can grow. Our methods, our communities, our society. We are all part of a garden. Someplace may need a prune in order to grow, someplace may need fertilizer in order to live up to its potential. Be it through pointing out blind spots, sharing your experiences, bringing in expertise from other fields or bringing your own expertise into play – you will lead the way.

You as a researcher
You are intrigued by a phenomena, a concept, a mysterium, and you feel an urge to investigate and understand. You explore iterations of a preexisting method, or a new interesting one, that could evolve our status quo. No matter if you deconstruct what we take for granted, or rethink and construct something new, we can explore and play with: your dedication, your eye for detail and love for understanding complexities let the rest of us become wiser.

Maybe you have another approach you want to explore? Feel free to create your own way of doing things!

Community Wishes 

As the foundation for this call, we (Frederikke and Anne) facilitated two open workshops, several conversations, brainstorms and debates made, as well as thoughts shared together at KP26, on social media and in private conversations. On this basis different clear areas of interest emerged. These are intended as inspiration and could be where you start your process. 

• Accessibility, safety and transparency: How do we create accessible and safe larp events together? How do we best talk about the decisions we have made and the consequences of them? How do we work across cultures efficiently? Where are our blind spots: those themes, taboos and take-aways we don’t want to talk about, but need to, in order to grow? What words do we use and how? Where have we already worked on such issues and what outcomes and insight has that left us with?
  
  
• Age integration:  How do we take care of each across generations? How do we make sure specific age groups feel a part of our community? How do we work with and not against each other across age gaps? What perspectives are missing in this conversation? How do we take into account ingame and offgame power structures tied to experience and age? What dynamics are at play when we grow into a new age group? How can we address the transitional space between age groups? What do second generation larpers experience when they grow up in our community? What experiences have we already made that are worth building on?
   
• Decolonization: How do we talk about and work with decolonization? Which structures are we reproducing and how can we work on them in a constructive way? What structures have our 25+ years production of knowledge created? Should it change and if so, how could it change? What should we keep and why? How do we then continue our work from here? How do we move the focus from individuals to structures and cultures? Can we draw inspiration from other communities or fields?
  
  
• Tools and methods: Do we have gaps – what are we missing? What new thoughts should we explore? What new tools and methods need to be shared? How can we make it easier to access and find the knowledge, methods and tools we have already created? What are new ways we can share them? What about AI – do we use it or not, what is needed for us to be able to use it, and in what ways can we lead the way in constructive use of AI?
  
  
• Our surrounding world: Where do we find playmates from other areas? How do we work together with other communities and cultures? What inspiring progress has been made in other communities and fields we can draw on? Do we hold views that hinders or fosters interactions with our surrounding communities? Where could larp make a difference, or a bigger difference than it does now?
  

AND! Of course, we need YOUR AWESOME IDEA! This is not a comprehensive list of content, we need you to include your thoughts and view on the matter!

Join the workshops
We are hosting two workshops and sparring sessions during August. The workshops, open to anyone interested, are meant as a place to discuss your ideas and get feedback from a group. Have in mind we want to see concepts and topics addressed from multiple angles, so others covering the same topic is only a good thing. Your perspective matters. We will host two, one on Wednesday August 5th at 9am CET and one on Tuesday August 18th 7pm CET. They will take place on our Discord: https://discord.gg/Hud2hNNKhj. 

Request a 1:1 sparring session
The 1:1 sparring sessions with mentors, is meant as a one time video call, where you can discuss your idea with a volunteer mentor, so you can try to formulate it before you apply it to acceptance in the publication. We will do our best to source extra sparring partners should the need be greater than what our mentors have time for, but have in mind everyone is doing this on a volunteer basis. Even more support can be found

We have various ways to support during the writing/creation process. You can access the resources regardless of your level of experience, age, education and so on:

• Mentors: Be it for visual or written contents you can get support in the process. You sign up for a mentor in the pitch questionnaire and we will do our best to pair you up with a mentor.
  
  
• Creating sessions: To draw on the power of community and body doubling, we will schedule sessions where we each set a goal, create in silence together for a set amount of time and finish by checking in and signing off.
  
  
• Workshops: If we see a need for a workshop of any kind we will gladly facilitate this. This also means if you see, or have a need, for one please contact us! 
   
• Discord: Our main contact platform, where you will find all other contributors in this project. Here you can talk with, take part in writing sessions and workshops, find information and ask questions. We will have community hosts, but the Discord will only be a lively place if you too use it.
  
  
• Editors and proofreaders: A team of editors and proofreaders will help get the contents across the finishing line. All pieces are distributed between the team members.
  
  
• Main facilitators: We, Anne and Frederikke, are here to make sure this publication becomes a reality. This means facilitating wherever we can: on both macro and micro levels.

Process & Expectations

When you answer the call you will receive a copy confirming we have received it on email. 

When we’ve reached the pitch-deadline, we will look through all pitches, and the big task of making sense of it all and putting it into a preliminarily meaningful structure takes place. This part is intense, on our end, but we strive to do it within a short week. While the tone is initially set by the call, the publication itself is led by its contents. There are no pre-approved pieces or contributors ahead of the deadline. If your pitch has potential, but a different framing or perspective could make it a better fit, or more people pitch similar ideas, we will reach out to you and look into how we make space for as many voices as possible.

We will do a kick-off (on Discord) ultimo-mid September together. But you can start creating your contribution starting ultimo September. We will be working through October. Have in mind this includes both first and second draft. It is a very tight timeline – as KP27 falls early in the year so does the print deadline. This means we need you to contact us, should life throw you curve balls or you face a challenge you might need sparring or help overcoming. Life be lifing but making a KP publication is a community effort and we are ready to help you cross the finish line.

What we expect of you
To make sure, you know what you say yes to by participating in this content creation, we have concrete our expectation to you. We expect you to:

• send in pitch/sketch/idea
• create a piece of content made by your own hand that is unique and therefore owned by yourselves
• use Google Drive (as we currently have no better alternative)
• only use material that you are legally permitted to use
• complies with the AI policy (currently being developed)
• make sure your final piece follows the style guide and stays within the allotted word/size/relevant to the media metric limit (will be determined based on amount and kinds of contributions we receive and limitations of printing)
• communicate with us either on Discord or email
• communicate your needs, thoughts, limitations, so we can help you in the process
• communicate directly with your mentor, should you have one

Answering the Call

The call is open to everyone. No matter your age, your geographical location, or your experience in larping and writing. We do not expect you to have it all figured out at this stage. It does not need to be a perfect pitch or fully formed piece. This is early in the process after all. But we need you to answer this call. We need to hear your voice.

To answer the call you fill out the questionnaire linked below. In it, we ask you to share your name and contact information, a short bio (40-50 words max), a short pitch, 3-5 keywords, and request for a mentorship (if relevant to you). You will also find some free space to share what else you think relevant. The pitch must be short and in your own words. You can for example cover what you want to create/write about, what and how you expect to cover it, what you want to say with the piece (framing, intention, perspective), what style and tone you expect to be writing in – whatever you find to be relevant to your idea. 

If you want to pitch more than one piece please send in one answer per idea.

Other Ways of Contributing 

It takes many people, in the previous years 60-100, to make this publication a reality and all of the work we do is volunteer-based. The majority of these are content creators but a growing team are working behind the scene in various capacities, examples are community hosts, mentors, proof readers, illustrators, graphics designers, editors, and more. Some are part of the entire process while others show up for a shorter amount of time and both ways are equally important. Both have their time, place and need.
